Watering Tips
While the
Denver Water Department and other area utilities have sought sharp cutbacks in
lawn watering during the drought, they encourage homeowners to concentrate on
saving trees and shrubs.

Watering
During the Drought |
![]() |
Even trees established a few years ago still need extra root watering to avoid long-term damage. |
| Water
deeply and slowly. Apply water so it moistens the critical root zone
to a depth of
twelve inches. Methods for watering include a deep root fork or needle,
soaker hose or soft
spray wand. Apply water to many locations under dripline. If a deep
root fork or needle is used, insert the device no deeper than eight inches
into the soil.
When should I water? Fall and winter watering, October – March, one to two times per month, depending on weather, temperature and soil conditions. Spring and summer watering, April – September, three times per month, depending on weather and watering restrictions.

| Mulch
helps conserve soil moisture. Apply organic mulch within the dripline,
at a depth of four inches. Leave a six-inch space between the mulch and
trunk of trees. Mulch materials may include wood chips, bark, leaves
and evergreen needles. Consistent moisture is needed. Drought stressed trees are more vulnerable to disease and insect infestations and branch dieback. Keep a watchful eye for anything that looks out of the ordinary.

Without Water, What Can We Grow? Xeriscaping
or planting xeric plants is an effective way to keep a landscape looking
beautiful as well as low water friendly. Native plants are often
tolerant to low water. There are many other plants that don’t
exactly fit into the low water category but can survive on moderate usage.
It is important to bear in mind that no plant will tolerate going from
ample watering to no water. Placement of plants in ideal locations
that mimic it’s natural habitat will help in reducing water needs.
